Hey everyone! It's Clara from My Sweet DIY, and today, we're diving into a fun project—crocheting a boho vest using earthy tones and vibrant colors. Inspired by the retro boho hippie style of the 70's, this vest is perfect for adding a bit of vintage flair to your wardrobe. Join me as I walk you through the entire process, from selecting the yarn to completing the final stitches.
A Trip to the Yarn Store
To capture that bohemian vibe, I headed to my favorite local yarn store. I chose a mix of earthy tones and vibrant colors to create a dynamic, eye-catching vest. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
**Materials:**
- Yarn in earthy tones (rust, mustard, cream) and vibrant colors (turquoise, green)Here I am using Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-pilling
- Crochet hook (appropriate size for your yarn) Here I am using a 5 mm Crochet Hook https://amzn.to/46i1XOW
- Scissors https://amzn.to/46gFhyN
- Stitch markers https://amzn.to/3zT1MgV
- Tapestry needle https://amzn.to/3LERsMq
Crocheting the Granny Squares
The foundation of our boho vest is the classic granny square. Here’s a step-by-step guide to crocheting your squares:
**Step-by-Step Guide:**
1. **Magic Ring and Initial Setup:**
- Start with a magic ring. Wrap the yarn around your finger and insert your hook under one strand. Yarn over and pull through.
- Chain three (this counts as your first double crochet).
2. **First Round:**
- Make two more double crochets into the ring.
- Chain three (this forms the corners).
- Repeat the pattern of three double crochets and chain three until you have four sets of double crochets and four corner spaces.
- Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain three.
3. **Second Round:**
- Slip stitch to the next corner space. Chain three, then make two double crochets in the same corner space.
- Chain three and make three double crochets in the same corner space.
- Chain one and move to the next corner. Repeat the pattern (three double crochets, chain three, three double crochets).
- Continue until the end of the round, then join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain three.
4. **Third Round:**
- Repeat the pattern: chain three, two double crochets, chain one, and move to the next space. In the corners, make three double crochets, chain three, and three double crochets.
- Continue this pattern until you complete the granny square, 15 inches . Follow the measurements.

Creating the Vest
Once you have your granny squares ready, it’s time to assemble the vest.
1. **Measurements:**
- Each square should be approximately 15 inches. The side panels are about 2 inches by 7 inches.
- Leave 8 inches for the armholes and 4 inches for each strap.
2. **Side Panels:**
- Attach the yarn to the bottom corner of the square and chain three.
- Make two double crochets, chain one, move to the next space and continue with the granny square pattern until you reach the armhole mark.
- Repeat on the other side.
3. **Straps:**
- Attach the yarn at the top right corner. Chain three, then make two double crochets.
- Chain one, move to the next space, and continue the pattern.
- Repeat until the straps are long enough (approximately 4 inches).
4. **Assembly:**
- Sew the sides and straps together using a tapestry needle.
- Make sure to leave the 8-inch space for the neck.

After sewing the panels and straps together, your boho vest is ready to wear! This vest is a perfect blend of vintage style and modern flair, making it a versatile piece for any wardrobe.
